Dyson is a name that we’ve all come to associate with technological innovation, ground breaking engineering and simplistic, elegant styling. The Dyson ‘Air Multiplier’ is the company’s first foray into the world of desk top fans and, in typical Dyson style, has turned the game on its head, completely doing away with all of the fundamental design features you’d associate with a fan.
For a start the ‘Air Multiplier’ is completely bladeless. Much like Dyson’s renowned range of vacuum cleaners, the ‘Air Multiplier’ works using patented technology that you won’t find being used by any of its competitors. So, how exactly does this miraculous device actually operate?
Whilst the long answer to that question requires a decent working knowledge of some of the finer points of physics, the short answer is that it uses a small, internal, brushless motor to take in air through its base. This air is then ejected through small silts in the outer ring at a speed of roughly 55mph. As the air passes through the hoop it drags in more along with it due to friction, a process scientists call ‘inducement.’ This increases the air flow fifteen fold, creating a steady stream of cool, smooth air at a rate of up to 119 gallons per second.
Whilst this technology has been used before (a similar principle is used to provide air conditioning in the cabins of commercial airplanes) the ‘Air Multiplier’ is the first product to use the principle to power a fan. So, how do the results differ from a conventional fan? Well, whilst the controls and functions are much the same as you would expect to find elsewhere, there is no buffeting (the swirling uneven quality created by rotating fans) which makes living with the fan less annoying and chaotic than with conventional fans and their random, scattering airflow.
However, the real differences lie in the fans appearance and increased safety. The stylish, elegant design is much more aesthetically pleasing than the combination of grilles and blades that, even in a work environment, make regular fans look ungainly and industrial and, although speculative buyers may at first be dismissive of the safety benefits gained from doing away with blades, those who have prior experiences of injuries from fans, or young children in the home, will undoubtedly find the added peace of mind an attractive prospect.
The Dyson Air Multiplier comes in 4 different models, 2 desk fans namely the AM01 10 inch and 12 inch, the AM02 tower fan and the AM03 pedestal fan but whichever you choose you will still get all the benefits of a smooth flow of air.
